2012 has been a year of high highs, a few lows, and a whole lot of anticipation. The first half of this year was one of the best of our lives, filled with great friends and family joining us for our wedding in Jamaica. Then we were off to our 3 week honeymoon in SE Asia!
Our Wedding
The year started with us apart as Hannah celebrated with friends in Minneapolis for her Bachelorette party, the next weekend I had my party in Chicago. And before you know it we were standing under an alter on the white sands of Negril, Jamaica. Joined by 50 friends and family members, most of which stayed at the same resort, made for one of my favorite vacations. We said our vows over looking the turquoise waters, and had cocktail hour as the big orange globe sank, and then danced the night away under the stars. The whole day was perfect, and Negril will always be a special place for us.
Honeymooning
After just a little over a month back at home after our wedding, we were on a plane bound for Bangkok. We had three weeks in late March through April to soak up the sights, sounds, and sand of Thailand and Indonesia. It was our first trip to Asia and we loved ever minute of it, we reluctantly headed home already planning a return trip.
Knee Surgeries
The lows of the year would have to be the amount of down time I have had this year. Going out for surgery twice, first for a short stint in July for a double knee scope, and then the big one in October that had me in bed for nearly 2 months! I am still recovering and will be starting 2013 with a gimpy-limp. Hopefully it will have all been worth it when we are climbing volcanoes in Guatemala, and Hiking Matchu Pitchu next year as we circle the globe.
Other highlights
In addition to our wedding and honeymoon we managed to sneak out of town a few times within the US, visiting New York City, Saint Louis, Chicago, and Minneapolis. Our favorite weekend trip this year had to be NYC, which we took advantage of one of my work trips for a few fun days in the city. Other at home highlights would have to be the Beer festivals of summer and fall, parties for sporting events, friends weddings, and having some friends stay with us from out of town.
Deciding to Take Our Trip
The biggest decision of the year had to be committing to taking our trip. Just before 2012 started we were in Belize for our December trip, and we met some really interesting people. The people we met and the conversations we had planted the seeds that would later sprout into what is now this trip and our website. We talked with several travelers that were on their own long term travel, before this trip we had no idea people actually did this. After returning from Belize we found others on the Internet and it soon developed into a nightly habit scouring blogs, and dreaming of a year long trip. Through the winter months of 2012 dreams turned to obsession, and once after our honeymoon we both knew we had to do it.
