Since the day we bought our flight to the Philippines I’ve been both excited and slightly terrified to try the food the Filipinos are famous for, Balot.
Inside this shell is most people’s worst fear when it comes to eggs, there is more than a yolk inside. Its continence includes a two-week-old duck embryo. Yummy…
I was glad to brave the Balot with some local experts, our friends at Where 2 Next Hostel Manila helped us pick some good eggs (from the guy outside of 7 eleven selling them out of a styrofoam cooler, obviously that’s where to get the best Balut around, duh!), and they also showed us how it’s done.
If you are headed to the Philippines you will likely find yourself in Manila at least once, Where 2 Next makes a good base with a helpful and fun staff. Where else can you eat fertilized duck eggs with new friends from all over the world?
If you find yourself in El Nido def add it to your things to do in El Nido list, as we didn’t see a ton of Balut outside of Manila and El Nido.

Yikes, I could never eat it. When I lived in Cambodia my colleagues always wanted me to try it, but when I saw the feathers and beaker I couldn't eat it. I did try tarantula though, which is probably equally as gross, as it still had its hair on it. :-)

I'm Filipina and I've never tried. I don't think I ever will either. I never say never but damn balut (the spelling I'm used to) is nastyyyyy. Haha.
Have fun in my Motherland!
