Summer Island Maldives | A Week In Paradise

Summer Island Maldives…It has a good ring to it, doesn’t it?

Everyone loves summer, everyone loves an island, and everyone would love to go to the Maldives! So does a place called Summer Island Maldives actually exist? Yes, yes it does and it’s pretty fricking amazing. A Maldives honeymoon at Summer Island is just what all newlyweds need.

Can you see Adam on the dock flying the drone? Our room is the last one on the right, with gorgeous sunrise views every morning.

We spent 11 nights in an over-the-water bungalow at Summer Island and basically had to be forced out of our room…we didn’t want to leave Summer Island EVER.

There are tons of all-inclusive Maldives resorts and it’s hard to pick with Maldives resort is right for you. We are super happy we picked Summer Island Maldives and here’s everything you need to know about Summer Island.

How To Get To Summer Island Maldives

Summer Island is a private Maldives resort located about 50 minutes away from the capital city of Male by speedboat. We took the speedboat from Male airport, there is an option to travel to the island via seaplane, but as you would guess this is a much pricier option.

We highly suggest taking a seaplane while in the Maldives at least once, the best views of the Maldives islands are from a seaplane. Extra points to Summer Island because their speedboat had free Wifi that actually worked!

Our bed was literally ten steps to the ocean. Staying in an over-the-water bungalow in the Maldives was a dream come true.

Over The Water Bungalow At Summer Island Maldives

We stayed in an over the water bungalow at Summer Island Maldives, which was everything we had imagined. We literally could step out into the ocean right for our bungalow. It felt like we had our own private Maldives resort, we had a balcony with 2 lounge beds and an inviting ocean, no need for a pool here. Inside our room, we had a “fish window” cut into the floor where we could watch the fish swim by. No joke, every time we looked there was a fish, this was our 3rd over the water bungalow in the Maldives and no other Maldives resort had half as many fish.

Hannah caught feeding the fish by the drone!

Even the windows surrounding the bathtub opened up to the surrounding turquoise waters. There was a day where we literally only left our room twice, for breakfast & dinner, we couldn’t be bothered to leave for lunch. Even though we were tempted by the ice cream that was served every lunch & dinner…we all know Hannah has a slight addiction to ice cream.

Hannah is ready for happy hour at the over the water bar in the Maldives.

Food & Drinks At Summer Island Maldives

There are two restaurants at Summer Island Maldives. We ate all of our meals at the restaurant over the water, as this restaurant is for those staying in water bungalows only. We were on the all-inclusive plan so enjoyed ice-cold beers as we watched the sunset and then headed into dinner which was served semi-buffet we ordered our mains of the nightly menu. Our favorites meals were the sesame seed crusted tuna and the beef wellington.

One of the best day trips in the Maldives was to a sandbank island. The views from the drone show how epic the Maldives are.

Things To Do On Summer Island

There are a ton of activities on the island to keep you busy during your holiday. There are several day trips from Summer Island, we loved our sandbank island tour where we literally took the speedboat to a sandbank floating in the middle of the ocean.

eagle rays in the Maldives seen diving in the Maldives

Adam spotted a bunch of eagle rays while diving in the Maldives.

Adam was able to do some diving in the Maldives with the onsite dive shop and he even got Nitrox certified during our stay. What better place to get dive certified than in the Maldives? Diving in the Maldives is some of the best in the world. Don’t forget to pack your GoPro and if you are wanting those fun over-under shots check out our GoPro dome tips article.

Hannah just chilling on the beach in the Maldives.

Summer Island is home to two gorgeous white sand beaches, one on each side of the island, always a chair to sit and relax. We would spend the morning on one side and then follow the sun to the other beach later in the day.

Spa with glass floor looking down into the ocean at Summer Island Maldives

Spas in the Maldives are amazing but the spa at Summer Island was the best, look at the view!

The spa…we have never been to a spa quite like this one. The spa is set up over the water where you are looking down at the fish window, and once again a ton of fish were always swimming by. The over the water spa rooms have all glass doors that open up to the ocean. This was the perfect setting for a Balinese massage in the Maldives. Make sure to ask about their specials they seemed to have special prices on your first day. No better way to beat jet lag than a relaxing couples massage.

Infinity pool in the Maldives next to the ocean

Tough decision..infinity pool or the Indian Ocean?

There is an infinity pool by the beach bar but honestly we only spent one of our afternoons there, we preferred to swim out to the hammock floating in the middle of the ocean. When in the Maldives you don’t really need a pool.

Hammocks are so much cooler when they are in the Maldives!

We planned on visiting the gym but yeah that also didn’t happen we got our workout swimming in the Indian ocean which you can’t do at home.

Even the nights in the Maldives are crazy, stars for days.

It’s safe to say we fell in love with Summer Island Maldives. It has everything you could possibly ask for in Maldives vacation.

There are some great low-season deals so make sure to book early online.

7 Reasons Why I Never Want to Leave Summer Island Maldives

I don’t wanna go. I don’t want to pack my bags and leave this magical little drop of sand in the Indian Ocean. We have called a water bungalow at the end of the dock home now for over a week, but we’re not ready to go yet. I don’t think I ever want to leave this little slice of paradise known as Summer Island Maldives. Here are seven reasons why I never want to leave this place!

1. The water

7 Reasons why I never want to leave Summer Island Maldives-5

The water color is out of this world

The main reason we wanted to visit the Maldives in the first place is for pictures like this. Just look at this water! Summer Island Maldives is on the west side of North Male Atoll on Ziyaaraifushi Island. The island has a reef that runs the perimeter of the island keeping waves calm and gives the water about 5 shades of blue. I could stare out into the waters around Sumer Island Maldives forever.

2. Diving

Like most places in the Maldives, the diving is pretty ridiculous. We jumped in the water with the dive shop on the island, Diverland Maldives, for a pretty remarkable dive. As soon as we jumped in we descended on a group of 26 eagle rays calmly sailing by. Eagle rays of all the rays look so elegant and effortless under the water. Also on the dive, we ran into SHARKS, turtles, and a whole bunch of colorful reef fish.

3. The Water Bungalows

At the end of the island stretching out into the aqua blue waters surrounding the island are 20 private water villas. If I woke up in one of these villas every day for the rest of my life I think I would be okay with that. The villas are outfitted with a glass bottom window to the sea where you can watch fish swim by day or night. On the outside of each bungalow is a private sun deck with loungers to relax in the sun overlooking the pristine waters.

4. The Barefoot Dock lifestyle

7 Reasons why I never want to leave Summer Island Maldives-6

Barefoot lifestyle at Summer Island Maldives

I don’t want to go back to wearing shoes. Summer Island is a small sand-covered island and shoes aren’t really necessary. The longest walk is from the end of the dock to the pool, and that’s the way I like it.

5. Snorkeling

7 Reasons why I never want to leave Summer Island Maldives-Snorkeling

Snorkeling with Nemo at Summer Island Maldives

Being surrounded by a reef the snorkeling here is of course pretty good. On a few of the snorkeling expeditions, we encountered massive 200-pound tunas, white tips reef sharks, lots of anemones with clownfish, and a full range of colorful reef fish. All this just a few short kicks from the shore of Summer Island Maldives.

The reef around the island is a combination of natural and man-made reef systems installed to encourage natural reef growth. If you love snorkeling considering spending a few nights at Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon they have a house reef that is amazing.

6. The Hammock

About 100 feet from shore in the shallow calm waters sits a hammock suspended by two poles. One of the best places to be on the entire island is gently rocking back and forth in the hammock with the waves. It would be the perfect place for an afternoon nap if the tides are right!

7. Sunsets

7 Reasons why I never want to leave Summer Island Maldives-Sunset photo

A fiery sunset over Summer Island Maldives

Being a tiny little white sand island, it’s perfect for both sunrise and sunset. As beautiful as sunrises can be, we are more sunset people, it fits our schedule better. Every night you could find us in the best place on the island for sunset, the wooden bar suspended over the water. The westward-facing bar has front row seats for the nightly show of colors here at Summer Island Maldives.

Lastly, Without the people, it would just be a place. The people that make Summer Island Maldives run, are a special element to the resort. Everyone always has a smile on their face and are always ready to take care of your needs without being overbearing.

Hello Hannah,

I would like to know how far the reef is approx. in minutes. And is the water calm or wavy at the edge? Thank you!

You can reach the reef in 2-3 minutes of swimming. inside the reef, it is very calm and we saw some large species of fish here - some of the best snorkeling near the island on the 5 resort islands we visited in the Maldives.

Hi Hannah

I’m considering taking my family as our last true family holiday - is this a place for a family or is it couples? 3 children, 2 of which are 15 & 18 other adult?? Thank you in advance

When we were there in June & July it was a mix of couples and families. I would say it was more couples staying in the overwater bungalows at Summer Island. Your children are older so they will blend in easily.

Hello Hannah My daughter and l are heading out to summer island in August, saw Adama and your reviews and wondered if the kayak and paddle boarding is complimentary. And also what snorkelling trips are best to do. It’s a once in a lifetime holiday and after a very tough few years, really want to make the best of this amazing experience Many thanks Heather X

I remember them being free, but I would email them to confirm. I would suggest taking the snorkeling tour to see the turtles and also a day trip to sandbank island is fun too.

Hello,

We are going to the summer island Maldives hotel in one month and you article just makes us want to jump on a plane tomorrow! I received the list of water activities from the hotel and will defo do the sandbank excursion. However they offer two different options : one with a picnic at 250$ per person and one simple one at 90$ per person. Could you tell me exactly what both comprises. This is not written on the flyer. Thank you very much!

You're going to love Summer Island. The sandbank trip is a must! Are you you staying on the all-inclusive plan? If so, I'd def just do the cheaper option. That is a big price difference and if it's just a picinic I would wait to eat when I got back to the hotel. I am sure if you email them they will inform you of the difference.
