The Andaman | A Peaceful Jungle Retreat in Langkawi

The Andaman | A Peaceful Jungle Retreat in Langkawi

On our last visit to Langkawi, we stayed at The Andaman, a luxury collection resort. Tucked away in the northwest corner of the island, The Andaman is a luxurious oasis surrounded by tall trees and lush vegetation.

In front of the property is a pristine private beach with uninterrupted views of the sunset. Walking into The Andaman, it feels like you are very far away from the rest of the world. The resort is a peaceful retreat in the middle of the Malay rainforest.

As rustic as the surroundings are, the rooms and the hotel are nothing but refined. The nicely appointed rooms come with plush king-sized beds and large spaces to relax. The luxury continues into the bathroom with a large rainfall shower and separate soaking tub.

We stayed in a suite room with an outdoor space and a private jacuzzi tub on the balcony. Other room types include deluxe, luxury, luxury sea-view,  and executive suites, some with a private plunge pool.

A feature of The Andaman that I wasn’t expecting was the in-house coral rehabilitation nursery project. In 2004, the tsunami that devastated the peninsula also wiped out the reef systems off the shores of Langkawi.

The Andaman is doing their part to bring the reef back to life in Langkawi. The coral nursery is a project headed up by resident Marine Biologist Dr. Gerry and assisted by students of a local university.

The project aims to promote knowledge of our oceans and the things that live just under the surface. The coral nursery gives the guests of The Andaman a chance to help out by transplanting coral and starting a miniature reef.

The small micro reefs are grown in the nursery’s pond and eventually put out into the sea. So far, the project has been a hit amongst visitors, young and old.

One of the more traditional draws to The Andaman is the seclusion of the property and that goes for the beach too. The resort is situated on a prime piece of sand and accessible by hotel guests only, keeping it from being overcrowded.

If the beach is too sandy for you, The Andaman also has several pools and even a waterslide for the kids. The pool is surrounded by nature with massive trees and gardens. Whether you prefer the pool or the beach, there is no better place to be at the end of the day than the beach for sunset.

The westward-facing beach gives beautiful sunsets almost nightly. Come sundown, the sky lights up in vivid pinks, purples, and oranges.

After the sun goes down, it’s time to head to one of The Andaman’s restaurants on the water. We ate at the signature restaurant, Jala. Located just a few steps from the shore, Jala specializes in everything related to seafood.

When you walk into the restaurant, you are greeted by one of the chefs at the fresh seafood table to help you pick your meal for the night. There is also an a la carte menu with additional items for the non-seafood lovers. The snapper was cooked to perfection with a nice sauce to compliment the fish.
