Snorkeling at Silk Cayes – Placencia, Belize

The water is so clear that there are at least 5 shades of blue at the different depths. Then the island is completely surrounded by coral reef, and variety pack of colorful fish.

The reef is a good depth to enjoy with just snorkel gear. Everything around the island is either just below eye level, or free dive-able.

It’s hard to choose if the view way better from above or below the surface. The snorkeling was top 3 that I have ever done, but just look views from the sand!

From shore, we saw a lemon shark just as we were gearing up, and then he can back around lunch time as our cooks through some scraps in the water.

During our afternoon snorkel with got a chance to swim with several rays, nurse sharks, and a massive lager head turtle, sadly the turtle did not want his picture taken and was extremely fast for a turtle!

    • Hi Kyla, Unfortunately I don’t think there are any boats that would take you to Silk Caye from Ambergris Caye they are very far apart. However, there are some other smaller Cayes and Atolls near Ambergris Caye worth checking out too.

        • The best way to do it is to catch a boat back to Belize City from AC (Ambergris Caye) and take a bus or shuttle there.

From the boat terminal in Belize City you can have a taxi bring you to the bus station and from there take the bus to Placencia. Or you may be able to organize a private transfer from the dock when you are in Belize.

Or there are flights between all of these places. You can take a flight from San Pedro on AC to Placencia. Look at Mayan Island Air for flights. It probably won’t be the cheapest option, but the quickest.

  1. I don’t know how to swim but reading this post and seeing those pictures makes me want to learn so I can go snorkeling. Thanks for sharing!!

  2. Great post guys! I haven’t been to Belize yet but it’s a place I plan to visit. Here in the FL Keys we have beautiful offshore water but the water near shore isn’t nearly as clear as in your pictures.
