Best Place for Camping Gear in Bangkok, Thailand

Camping doesn’t seem as if it has caught on here in Thailand yet judging by the limited amount of camping gear available. That being said there is good camping gear in Bangkok available, and here is our guide to where to find it based on our personal experience gearing up for our African safari.

If you only have 3 days in Bangkok you don’t want to waste it running all over Bangkok looking for the best places for camping gear.

Best overall hotel in Bangkok – The Westin Grande Sukhumvit

Biggest Selection of Camping Gear in Bangkok

Outdoors Unlimited in the Amarin Plaza, located on the second floor. Right by the Chit Lom BTS station.

This is more of a group of small independent shops that all sell different types of gear. Here, you should find most of the things you need, including sleeping bags, tents, sleeping pads, cooking equipment, waterproof bags, and just about everything you could find in a large outdoor store in the US or Europe.

There are many name brands here, but you will pay for it. Thailand has a high import tax, and all name-brand goods from other countries get very expensive.

Other options:

Best Pace for Camping gear in Bangkok Thailand

Equinox Shop in Siam Center on the 3rd floor. This is a small storefront near the escalators, but it had different options for tents, sleeping bags, and mats. We found the prices slightly better here for some things. This is also where we bought our sleeping pads 25mm thick for 550 Baht. They also have lightweight sleeping bags starting at 870 Baht.

Siam Center is located at Siam Tower, Rama 1 Road. It is right next to Siam Discovery, kitty-corner from MBK shopping mall.

Good For Standard Camping Supplies: Big C

This store is the Walmart of Thailand. Food, toiletries, and a very limited supply of cheap camping gear. There are coolers for sale here, and better food prices than the Tops Markets and 7/11 stores. There are Big C stores all over Thailand.

Khao San Road:

We thought with a large backpacker population, this area might have some gear, but we didn’t find hardly anything here. If you are in need of a bag for your camping gear this is still the best place to find backpacks and duffels for cheap.

However they are not quality, it’s almost all knockoffs. The last bag we bought here only lasted 3 months and needed several repairs to make it that far.

Where to Stay in Bangkok?

For a short trip to Bangkok, it’s important to stay somewhere with easy access to the city to make the most of your time.

Whenever we are in Bangkok, we always stay in the Sukmovhmit or Silom area of town. Both areas are great parts of Bangkok to stay in and have good hotel options but we like Siam slightly better.

RECOMMENDED BANGKOK HOTELS WE’VE PERSONALLY STAYED AT

  • Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok Affordable Luxury on Sukhumvit Check Prices Booking.com
  • Maduzi Hotel Boutique Hotel on Sukhumvit – Check Prices Booking.com
  • Lub’d Hostel Budget Siam Hotel/Luxury Hostel Check Prices Booking.com
  • W Bangkok Luxury Silom Hotel Check Prices Booking.com

We always try and stay in a Bangkok hotel that is close to the BTS, so that we can easily get around the city. You can’t go wrong with staying on Sukhumvit near BTS stops: Siam, Nana, Asoke, Phloen Chit, Chit Lom, and National Stadium. That way you can jump on the BTS easily or you have the option to walk as there are tons of restaurants/shops/bars/sights in the area.
