Best Stroller Wagon – Do You Need to Spend $900?

Best Stroller Wagon – Do You Need to Spend $900?

So, you’ve decided to make the leap from a traditional stroller to a stroller wagon. But now the question is, “Which one to buy?”

There are so many stroller wagons on the market now, with prices ranging from $100 all the way to $900.

Not to worry. I had all the same questions when deciding what the best stroller wagon was for my family, too. I researched the best ones out there, from high-end to classic, from the most cost-effective to the luxury high-end brands.

I considered them all, even the most expensive wagon for almost $1,000. If you are looking for a really good cheap stroller wagon, this one is awesome for the price.

In the end, I created this list of the five best stroller wagons to help other families doing the same thing. So, let’s get into it.

What is a Stroller Wagon vs. a Regular Wagon?

Let’s begin with the basics. A stroller wagon is a hybrid between a traditional stroller and a classic wagon. It brings together the safe and secure features of a stroller with the fun, carefree feel only a wagon can give.

A stroller wagon can be pushed like a stroller and pulled like a wagon.

With the safety of a stroller, kids are safely restrained in a harness. A brake system also works to keep the stroller wagon securely stopped. The handle can also be locked in an upright position like a stroller. It won’t hit the ground constantly like a traditional wagon handle.

Like a wagon, little ones have a 360 view of the world. They’re a bit further away from the parent pushing, so they feel like they have more independence. They are finally a big kid going on a big kid stroll. A stroller wagon is a perfect balance between safety and fun.

Things to Consider When Choosing the Best Wagon Stroller for You

What is the Wagon Weight Limit?

Stroller wagons have a pretty decent weight limit across the board. Most can hold over 100 lbs. Some, like the Wonderfold W4 Luxe Quad Stroller Wagon, can even hold up to 300 lbs total.

But when you look at the specs, you’ll find specific weight limits for each seat. This could be an important piece of information when choosing which to buy.

How Big is the Wagon? Will this Stroller Wagon Fit in the Trunk?

Most wagons are pretty big–which is probably what you’re looking for. Just know that the larger a wagon gets, the more difficult it can be to maneuver.

Stroller wagons are a great option for families on the go. So, it’s important to be able to pop the stroller wagon in the car and get going.  If you have a large SUV or minivan, this may not be an issue. But if your car is on the smaller side, you have to consider its size when folded. It’s a pain taking off the wheels every time you go to put it in the car.

Another factor to consider is weight. The heavier the wagon, the more difficult it is to lift into the trunk.

How Big is the Canopy on the Wagon?

Protection from the sun is a major concern. So, knowing how big the canopy is on the wagon is crucial. Canopy options are very different from brand to brand.

The Wonderfold and Keenz have huge canopies that span the length of the wagon. However, it’s a bit awkward for children to climb aboard, making folding more difficult.

Evenflo comes standard with two canopies, one for each seat. But when extended, they do not provide full coverage.

Canopies for the Veer Wagon are add-ons, so you’ll pay extra. But when using two, they provide near full protection from the sun.

How Does the Wagon Stroller Fold?

Across the board, stroller wagons are pretty easy to fold and unfold. Thank goodness they’ve figured that out. But the truth is they don’t all fold in the same way.

Many on the market feature the accordion fold, like the Wonderfold, Keenz, and Radio Flyer. This makes it easy to fold and unfold. But most of these are still bulky when folded. The majority feature a latch system to help keep the wagon folded up so it doesn’t pop open, which is a plus.

The Veer, on the other hand, folds all the walls down to create a compact fold. Although this is a different way to fold, it’s not difficult and takes about the same amount of time as the other wagons.

How Easy Is it to Clean?

The cleanable factor is a big deal for me. Adventures with kids can get messy, and it’s super important to be able to clean up fast and with as little hassle as possible.

Stroller Wagons like the Veer are great for cleanup. You just hose it down and let it air dry. It can’t get much easier than that.

Some stroller wagons, like the Wonderfold, can be wiped down. The fabric covers can also be machine-washed and air-dried.

How Much Storage Does the Wagon Have?

Storage is a big selling point for stroller wagons. I got a stroller wagon partly because of all the storage and things it could hold instead of me carrying them.

Most stroller wagons have pockets for the kids to use, which is nice. But when it comes to hauling your gear, some brands are better than others.

The Wonderfold has a large storage space under the footwell. You can access it from the footwell or through a zipper on the outside.

The Veer does not come standard with a large storage area. They offer this add-on storage that attaches to the outside of the wagon, as pictured above. Even though it costs more, it’s easy to access, and the zipper close feature is a plus.

The Keenz steps up storage with theirs, which is cooler. Perfect for adventures in the sun.

Are Stroller Wagons Allowed at Disney?

No. Disney specifically bans wagons and stroller wagons at all of their theme parks. This is a relatively new rule that many of us are sad about. Make sure to read our best strollers for Disney article to help you figure out what works best for your family.

If you want the option to stroll at Disney, be aware that all strollers must be 31 inches wide and 52 inches long or smaller. Make sure to read out the approved Disney strollers list here.

If you are traveling with two kids, I suggest the Zoe Twin. Read my review on the Zoe Twin double stroller. If you are traveling with one child, hands down, get the Joolz Aer; it is the best single travel stroller. If you are looking for a cheap but comfortable stroller, this is the best option.

Are there Car Seat Adapters?

Some stroller wagons do have car seat adapters.

The Veer, for example, has car seat adapters for a ton of different car seat makes and models. They can be purchased separately here as an add-on. Just make sure to buy the adapter that fits your car seat.

How do you Get in the Wagon? Is there an Entry Door to the Wagon Stroller?

Getting in and out of the wagon is a bit different from wagon to wagon.

The Wonderfold is high, so climbing in is tough for little ones. But it does have a side-zip doggy door so kids can climb in and out easily.

Wagons like the Veer are lower to the ground, so kids can more easily get in and out on their own. But it is a bit more difficult for parents to bend down to help kids in or out.

Best Luxury Wagon Stroller – Wonderfold

Looking for luxury in the world of stroller wagons? Then check out the Wonderful wagons. It’s designed for the adventurous family that likes a bit of comfort, too.

A key feature of the Wonderfold is that it has a huge weight capacity. At 300lbs, it’s more than its competitors.

The storage on the Wonderfold is awesome. There are a bunch of parent-facing pockets and pouches. A large removable basket under the handlebar keeps stuff secure with a zipper closure.

Wonderfold has so many different models with different options and price points. The Original W1 and W2 begin around $500 and go up to $659.  The Elite wagons run from $530 to $700. And at the higher end, the Luxe ranges from $650 to $900.  All of these models come as a double (for two kids) or quad (for four kids). So you can choose the right one for your family.

  • Weight limit: 300lbs total with 45lbs per seat
  • Wagon dimensions: 44.5″ L x 52.5″ H x 25″ W (with canopy in place)
  • Folded dimensions: 25″L 40.5″ H x 19″ W
  • Recommended Age: 6 months to 6 years
  • Weight: 55lbs

Pros

  • Multiple Models, each with Double or Quad options
  • Weight limit up to 300lbs
  • Doggy Door Entry
  • Full Canopy Roof with adjustable height
  • Canopy Fabric can be moved and repositioned along the rods
  • Large handlebar with three positions
  • 5-point harness seats
  • Tons of storage
  • One-foot brake system
  • Foldable with Canopy in place
  • Removable & Reclining Raised Seats
  • Mesh sides have roll-down fabric, so you can adjust for different weather
  • All-Terrain Wheels

Cons

  • Price Tag from $400 up to $900
  • Heavy at 55lbs
  • Wipe down to clean or remove fabric to machine wash
  • Bulky Fold
  • The canopy, once removed, is a bit bulky. They can be stored above the large storage basket.

How Easy is it to Assemble/fold?

Folding the Wonderfold is, well, wonderful. To do it, activate the latch on either side of the wagon walls. You need both hands to do this. Once the fold is activated, compact the fold and secure it with the latch by the wheels.

The Wonderfold can be folded with the canopy in place.  It takes longer to put down the canopy than it does to fold the wagon.

The seats can be removed to fold the wagon. But with more use, the fabric will be relaxed enough to fold with the wagon.

Unfolding the Wonderfold is simple. Just undo the latch and push down on the center of the walls to click into place.

When folded, the Wonderfold is bulky, measuring 25in long, 40.5in high x 19in wide. So, keep that in mind. It will not fit in just everyone’s car.

Something unique about this stroller wagon different than others

  • Wonderfold offers stroller wagons in double or quads. So larger families can stroll together. In the quads, each seat has a 99lbs weight limit with a total weight limit of 300lbs. The double seats in the quad can also be adjusted to make just one harnessed seat.
  • The seats can recline by moving the clamps further down the frame.
  • The front-side doggy door entry is easy and fun for kids.

I ultimately decided not to get the Wonderful wagon because of how much space it took up in my trunk. If I ever have the need for a wagon for four kids, I will invest in the Wonderful W4.

Best Value Wagon Stroller – Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon

The Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon will give you the biggest bang for your buck. We have this wagon too. I do really like it, but it just isn’t as bougie and has all the bells and whistles that my Veer cruiser does.

Priced at $399, the Evenflo wagon costs less than many of its competitors. Since it has so many things included, like canopies, storage, and the snack tray, it’s straight up a great value.

The storage on the Evenflo is pretty nice. I love that the large storage basket comes standard and can be positioned inside or out of the wagon.

  • Weight limit: 120lbs
  • Wagon dimensions: 27″ W x 39″ H x 45″ L
  • Folded dimensions: 27.5″ W x 23″ H x 37.5″ L
  • Recommended Age: 6 months and up
  • Weight: 40lbs

Pros

  • 2 Canopies included
  • Handlebar adjusts position from push to pull mode
  • The front seatback (front gate) folds down to let kids climb in easily
  • 3-point harness
  • Collapsible Footwell
  • The storage basket can be positioned on the outside or inside of the wagon
  • Snack tray included
  • Car Seat Adapters available (purchased separately)
  • 2nd seat with 5-point harness add-on available (purchased separately)

Cons

  • Small interior, so it’s not made for bigger kids
  • Bulky fold
  • Small canopies do not give full coverage
  • Separate brakes on back wheels
  • Wipe clean

How easy is it to assemble/fold?

Folding the Evenflo Pivot feels similar to that of a traditional stroller. It takes a few more steps than other stroller wagons on the market, but not too many.

First, begin by folding down the front gate. Make sure the handlebar is in the push position and at the lowest height. Then press the fold buttons on either side of the middle of the wagon and pull up. This folded position is a bit bulky, measuring 27.5in wide x 23in high x 37.5in long.

Something unique about this stroller wagon is different than others

  • The handlebar on the Evenflo switches from push to pull mode by pivoting over the entire wagon. This is a great feature that makes pushing and pulling equally easy.
  • The large storage basket can be reversed to hang on the inside or outside of the wagon.
  • Car seat adapters are available for infant car seats.
  • Second seat option for younger children.

Veer Cruiser wagon canopy with two kids

Best Overall Wagon Stroller – Veer Cruiser

The Veer Cruiser Wagon is flat-out the best overall stroller wagon. This is the wagon I most often use. It is easy to fold down, weighs only 32 lbs, so I can easily lift it in and out of my car, and maneuvers great on all surfaces.

From its easy, compact fold to the way it tackles any terrain we give it, the Veer meets every challenge we throw at it.  I love the sturdy frame and the large all-terrain wheels. It maneuvers easily through tight spaces and can turn (pretty much) on a dime. I will say that it’s easier to pull the Veer rather than push it. But once I got used to it, it’s not a big deal anymore.

My kids love the Veer Cruiser. They feel really independent in their own space. It’s also low enough to the ground that they can climb in and out without much help. Make sure you read our detailed Veer Cruiser wagon review

child sitting in the veer wagon stroller with brother next to it

I did upgrade the Cruiser when I first bought it. Adding things like two canopies and a large basket to make our strolls more comfortable. My littlest can also nap comfortably in the bassinet Nap System.

  • Weight limit: 110lbs
  • Wagon dimensions: 37″ L x 20″ W x 25″ H
  • Folded dimensions: 37″ L x 20″ W x 14″ H
  • Recommended Age: 6 months and up, or from newborn (with use of car seat adaptors or the Nap System bassinet)
  • Weight: 32lbs

Pros

  • Super easy maneuverability
  • Large, All-Terrain tires
  • Easy fold down and open
  • Hose down to clean
  • Kid snack and drink tray included
  • 2 Adult cup holders included
  • Collapsible footwell
  • 3-point harness seats
  • Car seat adaptors available  (sold separately)
  • Nap System (bassinet) available  (sold separately)
  • Telescoping handle
  • Nice Veer travel bag for flying with wagon (sold separately)

Cons

  • It’s pricey at $699
  • Add-ons get costly, especially since things like canopies don’t come standard
  • Large Storage Basket is an add-on
  • Rain cover is sold separately
  • Pushing it is difficult with the smaller agile wheels in the back
  • Smaller than competitors
  • Seats do not recline
  • Seats cannot be removed

How easy is it to assemble/fold?

The fold of the Veer Cruiser stands out from its competitors. All four sides of the wagon fold down flat. To make this happen, squeeze the buttons in the middle of the wall frame. Then fold the handle down flat.

The fold is super compact, measuring only 37in long x 20in wide x 14in high– Much smaller than competitors.

To unfold, just pull up each wall to hear the click saying they’re in place.

Out of the box, the Veer Cruiser is nearly complete. All you have to do is put on the rear fenders and pop on the wheels. That’s it. You’re ready to stroll.

Something unique about this stroller wagon different than others

  • The Veer Cruiser can be used with newborns in two different ways. Car seat adapters let you transition the baby from the car to the Cruiser with a quick click and go. Another option is to purchase the Veer Nap System. This addition lets you fit a bassinet into the wagon for little ones up to 20lbs.
  • A great feature of the Veer is the collapsible footwell. This lets little one sit comfortably and allows the Cruiser to have a super compact fold.

Most Versatile Wagon Stroller – Keenz

Keenz rocks it with the different models of their stroller wagons. Choose from the 7S Original or XC-Luxury Comfort. Both are offered as double or quad. There’s also the double Class-City Sleek.

Price ranges from $500- $850. With so many options of models and price points, you can choose the one that’s right for your family. Here, I focus on the XC-Luxury Comfort double stroller wagon, which I love.

Something that sets the Keenz apart from others is the canopy. Essentially, they’ve thought of everything. It covers the entire wagon. Roll-down panels provide total coverage from the sun and prying eyes. And when you need to have a closer eye on your little ones, it unzips to reveal a window.

Another stellar thing about the Keenz is the handlebar. There are 2! That’s right. Both are exactly the same, just on opposite sides of the wagon. This way, you never have to decide if you want to push or pull. Just switch ends, and you’re off.

  • Weight limit: between 216lbs
  • Wagon dimensions: 26.25″ W x 43.5″ L x 56″ H
  • Folded dimensions:  26.25″ W x 24.25″ Lx 44″ H
  • Recommended Age: 6 months and up
  • Weight: 46lbs

Pros

  • Full-cover canopy roof with roll-down blackout side panels and rollback window
  • Adjustable handlebars on both ends
  • Cooler bag storage
  • Kid Snack Tray is included
  • Removable and Reclining Seats
  • Mesh sides with roll-down blackout panels
  • Multiple Models with double and quad options
  • Large, All-Terrain Wheels
  • The rear brake system and front locking wheels make it super safe and stable

Cons

  • Prices start at $750 for the XC
  • Heavy at 46lbs
  • Bulky when Folded

How easy is it to assemble/fold?

Right out of the box, you’ll have to do a bit of assembly. Putting in the rear brake system and wheels will take a bit of time. But it does not take much effort. And no extra tools are required.

Folding and unfolding the Keenz is really quite simple. Pretty much just pulling it up in the center of the two sides and latching it makes it secure. Reverse the process to unfold, and you’re rolling.

Something unique about this stroller wagon different than others

  • Keenz stroller wagons have the most sun coverage. With a full canopy roof, including roll-down blackout side panels, little ones are protected.
  • The Keenz stroller wagon has a handlebar on either end. So you can push it from either side. This makes the Keenz XC stand out from its competitors.
  • Keenz offers double and quad stroller wagons. This way, you can stroll with 2 or 4 kids at a time.

Best Basic Wagon – Radio Flyer 3-In-1 EZ Fold Wagon

Radio Flyer is a classic name in the wagon market. They’ve modernized with a series of wagons designed for different needs. Their 3-In-1 EZ Fold Wagon is a solid wagon that gets the job done. It’s even got the classic Radio Flyer red look. Not that this is a true wagon with only a pull option, not a stroller push option.

Radio Flyers offers two different 3-In-1 EZ Fold Wagons– One with a canopy and one without. Opting for the wagon without the canopy brings the price to a super low price point. The price for the wagon with the canopy is only $130 (much lower than competitors). It’s important to know that you cannot add a canopy after buying it, so you have to make the decision beforehand. The canopy is removable and stored in a side pocket which is convenient.

  • Weight limit: 150lbs
  • Wagon dimensions: 39.4″L x 21.3″ W x 32.7″H
  • Folded dimensions: 11″ L x 18.5″ Wx 26″ H
  • Recommended Age: 18 months and up
  • Weight: 19lbs

Pros

  • Great price at about $100
  • Super easy, compact fold
  • Lightweight at only 19lbs
  • Side wall zips down for easy access and to create a bench for the little ones
  • Telescoping Handle
  • Exterior side pocket
  • Cup holders

Cons

  • Small tires
  • No footwell, so kids sit with legs straight out
  • Simple two-point buckle
  • No latch to keep it folded
  • Wipe clean
  • No brake system
  • Pull Only

How easy is it to assemble/fold?

Out of the box, the Radio Flyer 3-In-1 is almost completely assembled. But to get rolling, you will need to attach the wheels and handle. To get this done, you’ll need tools like a hammer and wrench.

To fold the 3-In-1 EZ Fold Wagon, simply pull on the handle in the center of the wagon bed. That’s it. You can’t get much easier than that. The fold is super compact, measuring only 11inches long x 18.5in wide x 26in high.

Something unique about this stroller wagon different than others

Hands-down, the Radio Flyer 3-In-1 EZ Fold Wagon is the best basic wagon at the best price. It also has the smallest fold and is really lightweight compared to other stroller wagons.

Other FAQ Wagon

Are stroller wagons worth it?

I love our stroller wagons. We have two, the Veer Cruiser and the Evenflo Pivot Xplor. With two little ones, I tend to grab my stroller wagon over my stroller more often. So, for me, yes, it’s completely worth it.

It all comes down to if you’re going to use it. Kids typically outgrow strollers at about 4-5 years old. But jumping into a wagon is different. Some families find that their big kids are still strolling at 7, 8, or even 9 years old.

Is a Wagon or Stroller Better?

That’s a question that’s different for every family. Some families pass right by the stroller and opt for a stroller wagon, even right from birth. While others continue to use a traditional stroller on a daily basis.

For me, my oldest decided to be “a big kid” and wanted nothing but the stroller wagon. So we transitioned from stroller to wagon and haven’t looked back.

What Age Can a Baby Go in a Wagon?

Some stroller wagons are ready for babies straight from the hospital. This happens with the help of car seat adapters or a bassinet conversion. Check out Veer Cruiser and their car seat adapters. Wonderfold offers a bassinet add-on for both the W2  and W4 models.

Generally, most babies can start to ride in a stroller wagon when they can sit up on their own.

Which Wagon Stroller is the Best?

The best wagon stroller depends on you and your needs.

But in my opinion, the Veer Cruiser Wagon is the best overall stroller wagon. With great handling, a compact fold, and a sturdy frame, you can’t go wrong. It has really become my go-to ride.
